Determining one’s postsecondary plans and goals is a critical milestone during the high school years. Students must ultimately decide what they will do or pursue after their senior year. Their choices typically range from entering the workforce to attending a 4-year college or university. Some students will join the military, and others will decide to attend vocational schools or begin apprenticeships. A significant number of students still believe that they have no options or that their futures are bleak and lack promise. Because the U.S. economy faces serious challenges from international competition and technology advances are booming, the United States cannot afford to have students graduate from high school unprepared for the workplace.
