The situation in the engineering education in the Russian regions is estimated as stagnation (with some recovery and development in megacities) and a prolonged adaptation of the post-Soviet realities. This situation is fueled by a number of adverse factors, including: lack of a national strategy for the development of engineering education in modern conditions; significant differences in the level of development of regions; a low level of R & D (Research and Development) needs and innovation in small and medium business in the regions. A series of measures to overcome the aforesaid situation and the development of domestic engineering education is proposed, including: correction of vocational education development strategy; the transition to a more flexible formats of Federal State Educational Standard; active use of corporate resources in universities; empowerment of universities and profile faculties involved in preparation of engineers. © 2016 IEEE.
