Germany has enjoyed a relatively low youth unemployment rate, despite a temporary peak in 2005. This chapter describes recent developments in German youth unemployment and the mechanisms behind them. One important factor for the relatively low youth unemployment is the ‘transition’ track in vocational training that assists youths with lower competencies. Another factor is the shrinking of the cohort size and a shift to higher formal qualifications. © CEPR Press, 2015.
