potential for the provision of a credible work-based route for young people in the UK. In doing this, the chapter will explore the historical evolution of the work-based route, coming up-to-date with the establishment of the Modem Apprenticeship programme. Alongside a discussion of the nature and scope of the work-based route, the chapter will also examine the role and relevance of vocational qualifications.
