In Switzerland, official statistics began to be kept in the second half of the 19th century. Towards the end of the 19th century, Switzerland also saw the gradual development of its vocational education and training system (VET). However, statistical records of VET were slow to be put in place; general, annually updated data are available only from 1935 onwards. This article reconstructs the development of statistics on VET in Switzerland between 1880 and 1930, focusing on the main difficulties that explain this late start. As well as technical difficulties with data collection, these stem from the fact that the VET system at the time was only partially regulated and undergoing constant development, with structures and statistical categories that had yet to be established. © 2015 Éditions de ĺEHESS.
