Today, amongst Black youth, a popular phrase is 'Know your history, know your destiny'. This chapter examines the socio-historical context of working-class youth training. The account is not meant to be exhaustive but to highlight certain issues and factors which have been neglected. I shall examine the present YTS to see what are the potentialities and limitations of the new training initiative. It is looked at in a historical perspective in order to discover continuities between current and older forms of youth training and work. © 1988 Selection and editorial material copyright H.
