The organization of postgraduate medical education and training is needed: firstly, to relieve the university medical schools from the present necessity of attempting to teach undergraduates to the level of competence of an independently practising doctor; secondly, to assist the young doctor to obtain relevant vocational training to equip him or her for the career of his or her choice; thirdly, to ensure that provision is made for the continuing education of practising doctors so that they can keep abreast of the rapid advances being made in medical knowledge and skills. These points are examined in detail.
