This chapter explores the complex regulatory landscape of degree apprenticeships (DAs) in England and its impact on the quality of DA provision. It outlines the various agencies responsible for overseeing different aspects of DAs, including the Department for Education, Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education, Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills, Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, and Office for Students. The chapter discusses how these formal quality metrics, along with informal metrics such as provider reviews, influence the design, assessment, pedagogy, processes, engagement, and resources of DAs. While adherence to quality standards can lead to more relevant, practical, and employer-driven courses, it also poses challenges for higher education institutions in terms of compliance, consistency, and resource allocation. The authors provide a case study of Manchester Metropolitan University's Digital and Technology Solutions Professional DA to illustrate the implementation of quality interventions. They conclude with recommendations for embedding quality standards in the day-to-day delivery of DAs, including centralizing oversight, establishing robust processes, actively involving employers, and providing training to staff. As such, the chapter highlights the importance of considering the impact of quality metrics on the equitable and effective delivery of DAs. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Matthew Barr.
