Abstract

This article focuses on initial vocational education and training (VET) in industrialized countries. It identifies core dimensions of VET and discusses their role in shaping adolescent development. These core dimensions include international differences between VET systems, the description of VET as a learning and socialization environment, the social stratification and social inclusion properties of VET, and its role in explaining patterns of school-to-work transitions and career outcomes. The article concludes with a summary of the main points and highlights the most important research gaps. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights are reserved.
