The transition from education to work represents a critical stage in the lives of young individuals. This chapter focuses primarily on addressing the question of whether, how and to what extent school-to-work transitions differ between European countries. It explores the attempts to identify and explain the mechanisms behind different transition patterns. The analysis is cross-national with data drawn from the first European Graduate Survey, EUROGRADUATE Pilot Survey, a one-off pilot survey of recent graduates in eight European countries. The analysis shows that the employment status of the respondents differs by educational attainment, with the most recent Bachelor-level graduates exhibiting the lowest employment rates in their transition to the labor market, and also the highest risk of staying out of the market. Relatively low skill mismatch rates are observed in Greece compared to the other countries, while a significant number of the Greek graduates moved abroad, searching for a better job. © ISTE Ltd 2022.
