Mathematics Success for Underrepresented Community College Students through STEM Core: A Wrap-Around Student Services Model

Abstract

The STEM Core Expansion project is one initiative to help move the needle for our nation in broadening participation of underrepresented groups in STEM by developing clear, accessible, and supported pathways to two-year and four-year STEM degrees, to internships with STEM employers, and opportunities to join the STEM workforce with high-wage STEM career opportunities. The STEM Core model has been highly successful where it has been implemented, but the model has the potential to increase access to STEM education and careers for many more students at new sites. As this program is implemented at partner schools and as it continues to grow in other regions, it has the potential to close the gap in equity and access for academically underserved students throughout the nation. Through a lens of adapting to our national need for remote and virtual learning, this initiative creates a mechanism for broadening participation in STEM for small colleges that do not have high financial support nor enough students to form their own STEM Core cohort. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2022.

In short, the SSS engages with participants as case managers, prepared to help them confront problems ranging from poor academic preparation to lacking social skills to personal and family financial distress to mental wellness and behavioral health problems. The SSS meets with students individually each month to set goals, monitors academic progress daily (done through attending cohorted math classes daily and communicating with instructors), and prepares qualified students for internship applications and full-time employment placement. This academic case management approach has been extremely effective in STEM Core cohorts and is supported by research [27], [33], [34], [35].
