Three decades of development and low-cost laboratory research overview

Abstract

Practical activities in the laboratory can be carried out if they are supported by complete facilities, talented human resources, and supporting components. However, the economic constraints that occur in almost many countries have a considerable influence on the need for laboratories at every level of education. Along with the development of technology, many researchers have found alternatives to deal with the high cost of laboratory needs with the existence of low-cost laboratory innovations. This study aims to find out how the development and overview of low-cost laboratory research over the last three decades. The method used in this research is descriptive quantitative method using scientometric analysis. Collecting data for scientometric analysis using the Scopus database search with an interval of 1991-2021 regarding a low-cost laboratory. This study uses VOSviewer software as a tool to visualize data that has been downloaded from the Scopus database. The results and findings in the study show that the publication of research on low-cost laboratories during the last three decades in general continues to increase every year. The United States is the country that contributes the most in scientific publications. Authors Singh A and Kumar S are prominent authors because they have contributed a lot to scientific publications and have been widely quoted by other authors. Reliable sources of scientific publications can be seen from the many citations obtained, namely the sources of scientific publications from Lab on Chip and Radiation Protection Dosimetry. Keyword analysis shows that the topics most studied in low-cost laboratory research are laboratory equipment, low-cost, laboratory and remote laboratories. Based on state-of-the-art topics that are possible to be studied in the future, namely the Internet of Things, Arduino, and Covid 19. The findings in this study can provide an overview of the evolution of literature on low-cost laboratories for further research. © 2025 Author(s).
