A Low-Cost Example, Combining MIT App Inventor, Arduino Specific Components and Recycled Materials to Foster Engineering Education

ACM International Conference Proceeding Series

Abstract

During the last years, learners in all over the world are trying to acquire multi-disciplinary skills and knowledge, in order to tackle the challenges of the 21st century. The fast evolving mobile market industry resulted in a plethora of low-cost computer systems and pairing electronic components, at very affordable prices. This potential has not been left unexploited by the educational system and thus many relevant activities are developed, commonly under the STEM "umbrella". The educational curriculum of the engineering institutions is continuously updated worldwide, so as to follow the vast booming of modern digital technologies. In this regard, by following a PBL approach and by making things more appealing via setting targets that match real-world situations, a characteristic automatic control case is highlighted. The whole approach is exploiting arduino-like boards, some additional low-cost components and recycled materials. A step beyond that, programming tools like the app inventor are hired to offer remote interaction functionality, via smart phones, in-line with the modern IoT trends. The proposed case although tailored for university-level students is also suitable for secondary and vocational education, due to its simplicity and its modular and scalable architecture. © 2020 ACM.
