Award restructuring represents a fundamental transformation of Australian industrial relations. This article seeks to provide a clear understanding of what is involved in the process and its impact. Awards under Australia's system of state compulsory arbitration are legally enforceable documents covering approximately 85 per cent of the workforce. Two ideal types are identified to help explain the type of strategic choices likely to be faced by the key players in deciding on the forms award restructuring should take. One approach bong taken by employers is to narrowly focus on cost minimization measures, resulting in a defensive response from the unions about the ‘trade offs’ or ‘offsets’ they are being asked to make. The other approach involves unions and employers seeking agreement on a range of productivity enhancement measures which are not seen by the participants as having a zero sum outcome. Each of these approaches is discussed in relation to the new industrial relations of work organization, skill and wage determination. The impact of award restructuring will be highly variable. The differences can be partly explained by competitive pressures from product markets, past efforts at workplace reform and the credibility of the management in being able to sustain a process of change. © 1990 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Developmental pediatricians are being consulted by medical school promotion committees with regard to the course of action to be taken with learning-disabled medical students experiencing academic difficulties. Faculty attitude, a difficulty understanding the nature of learning disabilities, appears to be a major contributor to poor medical school performance on the part of learning-disabled adults. Utilizing the sequential-simultaneous information processing model as a simplified introduction to learning disability patterns, the authors argue that recommending intensive remediation of rote spelling and writing skills in students engaged in graduate education represents both a waste of time and a further emotional trauma to these young professionals. © 1989 by Williams & Wilkins Co.

Abstract Mastery of esoteric knowledge is one of the central features assigned by sociologists to fully professionalised service occupations, together with an orientation towards public service. There are, nevertheless, different views about the best way in which this education and socialisation can be provided for new recruits for practitioner roles. Some maintain that the university provides an ideal training ground. Critics of this view, however, call for a rejection of ‘university diploma mills’ and a return to the type of apprenticeship socialisation common during the premodern era. This paper tests the usefulness of these perspectives in understanding the occupational socialisation of Newfoundland and Labrador midwives. Three major styles of training ‐ traditional apprenticeship, vocational schooling and university education ‐ can be discerned. In comparison to both apprenticeship and academic styles of occupational socialisation, only vocational training nicely blended the art and science of midwifery to produce competent and committed professionals. This article reports the results of two questionnaire surveys conducted five years apart to evaluate the status and changes in obstetrics-gynecology (Ob-Gyn) units taught in physical therapy education programs. Sixteen new Ob-Gyn units were implemented in the five-year period between 1981 and 1986. Laboratory time for breathing and relaxation exercises decreased 50% between 1981 and 1986, whereas total hours for the Ob-Gyn unit remained the same. Fifteen respondents in the 1986 survey indicated gynecologic topic area content included reproductive anatomy, gynecological disorders, and evaluation techniques. The authors recommend increased laboratory time, development of Ob-Gyn internships, and further research. Threading Ob-Gyn concepts throughout the curriculum as well as having a concentrated Ob-Gyn unit are recommended.

This article reviews the practice visiting procedures employed in vocational training. The particular usage examined is that employed in the West Midlands region after a 10-year development period, although most regions employ a similar format. It is hoped that the article will be of particular assistance to practitioners contemplating an application to become a trainer. © 1989 Nature Publishing Group. All rights reserved.

During the 1970s and 1980s, vocational training for general practice developed from experimental beginnings to become established nationwide. Committees were set up nationally and regionally and methods devised for the approval of training practices. Important publications related to the discipline of general practice and to educational methodology appeared. The problems that remain include the absence of a compulsory assessment prior to entering general practice and the low remuneration for course organizers.

An orthodontic module for the vocational training scheme has been designed specifically with the needs of trainees in mind. It has the two-fold aim of streaming patients in relation to orthodontic requirement and providing a proper understanding of the very specific nature of interceptive measures so often advocated in relation to orthodontics. Due to its relative geographic isolation, the small area of Northern Ireland is an ideal region for a pilot scheme such as this.
