Effective communication in English is a critical behavioral competency for seafarers in a multilingual maritime environment, directly impacting operational safety. However, a gap exists between current Maritime English (ME) training in China and the actual communication demands of global seafaring. This study aims to identify the specific ME skills including linguistic, behavioral, and sociolinguistic dimensions that are most important for on-board performance and safety management from the perspective of pre-service maritime students at Shanghai Maritime University. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining structured questionnaires (n = 313) with in-depth follow-up interviews (n = 10). The results identified 24 highly needed ME skills, particularly focused on areas governing safety-critical behaviors, such as wireless communication, security protocols, and emergency procedures. In addition, based on learner profiling, the study depicts two different learner characteristics: exam-focused and work-focused students , each with different views on the importance of skills. Work-focused students place greater emphasis on the practicality of their skills. The interview data confirms and enriches these quantitative research results. The research findings emphasize that ME courses must be more closely aligned with real-world communicative scenarios and behaviors, prioritize scenario based teaching and practical operations, and tailor differentiated teaching based on learner psychology and behavioral preference. This study offers references for maritime education institutions with similar learner profiles to optimize ME curricula, prioritize secure communication skills, and strengthen industry-education collaboration, thereby enhancing pre-service maritime students ’ safety behavior and professional competitiveness in China. © 2026 by the authors.

Kazakhstan’s 2025 Water Code aims to institutionalize Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), but its success is threatened by a persistent “implementation gap” between policy requirements and the workforce’s practical competencies. This study provides empirical evidence of a persistent misalignment between water-related higher education and emerging governance demands in Kazakhstan by conceptualizing the implementation gap as a human-capital deficit. We conducted a repeated two-wave survey of students enrolled in “Water Resources” programs (n1 = 39, n2 = 82) to empirically diagnose this gap and examine changes in educational preferences over time. The findings reveal an overwhelming demand for dual education (97.6%), alongside a statistically significant shift (χ2(1) = 33.53, p < 0.001) from theory-oriented learning (56.4% to 4.9%) toward practice-oriented formats (30.8% to 62.2%). Key reported constraints include limited access to modern laboratories (47.6%) and insufficient real-world professional experience (28%). Taken together, these results indicate a structural misalignment between academic training and the competency requirements implied by ongoing water-sector reforms. The study concludes that dual education may function as an institutional mechanism for narrowing the policy-to-competence gap, supporting efforts to operationalize the 2025 Water Code and advance Sustainable Development Goals 4 and 6. © 2026 by the authors.

Purpose – Encouraging vocational education and training (VET) graduates to actively pursue their careers is imperative to foster the employment of well-trained and skilled personnel to provide companies with a competitive advantage in the long term. This study aims to investigate the factors shaping the career intentions (CI) of VET students based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) (Ajzen, 1991). When compared to previous studies conducted with university cohorts and adult populations, the current study uniquely examines the CI determinants of senior students from VET programs. Design/methodology/approach – Under the guidance of TPB, this study conducted an empirical investigation involving a survey of 513 VET students . Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the factors that influence students ' CI. At the same time, the moderating role of perceived behavioral control (PBC) in the relationships between career attitudes (CA)-CI and subjective norms (SN)-CI was tested. Findings – The findings obtained from the study showed that CI are influenced by CA, SN and PBC. Among these, the strongest predictor was PBC. In the suggested model, SN and PBC emerged as significant predictors of CA. Findings from the moderator test revealed that the relationships between CA-CI and SN-CI were not significantly influenced by PBC. Originality/value – The novelty of the current research lies in its examination of the antecedents of CI, its use with vocational education students and its focus on the TPB. The current research contributes to the awareness of policymakers, administrators and teachers about the factors that underpin CI among VET students . © 2026 Emerald Publishing Limited

This study aims to develop and test a conceptual model comprising six hypotheses focusing on the impact of Augmented Reality (AR) on students ’ academic self-efficacy. The research addresses the need to explore how AR technology can improve students ’ academic self-efficacy by examining the relationships between AR technology features, task value, usage intention, and personal cognitive approach. A total of 340 students participated in this research, completing online questionnaires as part of a controlled experiment. The Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Square was used to assess, test, and analyze the conceptual model. The results of this study indicate that the personal cognitive approach, tech features, and task value implemented by students all positively affect their academic self-efficacy in learning. The personal cognitive approach directly contributes to influencing task values and technological features. Task value and tech features contribute to improving usage intention in students while learning with AR. The personal cognitive approach and the usage intention of use contribute directly and significantly to enhancing students ’ academic self-efficacy. Overall, implementing a personal cognitive approach, tech features, task value, and usage intention positively boosted students ’ academic self-efficacy in learning with AR. © 2026, International Journal of Information and Education Technology. Inclusive education aims to ensure equitable access to quality education for all students , including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This research analyzes the attitudes and competences of non-university Spanish teachers regarding the inclusion of students with ASD, considering relevant variables in previous studies such as teacher training, prior experience, and educational context, among others. The study involved a sample of 2310 teachers in active service during the 2023–2024 school year. Data collection was conducted through two questionnaires: the INTEA-EDG questionnaire, designed to measure teachers’ beliefs and attitudes towards the inclusion of students with ASD, and the CEFI-R questionnaire, which evaluates teachers’ competencies and skills for inclusive education. The results reflect a generally positive attitude towards the inclusion of students with ASD in mainstream schools, although significant variations were found depending on variables such as previous experience, teaching specialization, and specific training received. Based on these and other findings, the study highlights the need to strengthen initial and continuous training in inclusive education and attention to diversity of students with ASD, promote early positive contact with students with ASD, and foster collaborative work and the design of inclusive learning environments. © 2026 by the authors.

Purpose: This study investigated student and teacher perceptions of engine mock-ups as instructional tools in automotive technology education. Design and Methods: A quasi-experimental design with single case study methodology was employed following educational intervention. Participants included two teachers and eight students from an Auto Mechanical Work program in Lagos State, Nigeria. Constructivist Learning Theory served as the theoretical framework, emphasizing active knowledge construction through experiential learning. Engine mock-ups constituted the primary intervention, with focus group discussions serving as the data collection instrument. Mock-ups underwent functional validation and pilot testing, while discussions received member-checking for qualitative rigor. Data collection occurred following three weeks of instructional implementation, with transcribed responses analyzed qualitatively for emerging themes. Results: Findings revealed strong alignment between mock-ups and educational objectives, enhanced student cognitive processing and motivation, and meaningful experiential learning opportunities. The tools improved teacher confidence, instructional delivery, and professional competence. Results indicate that accessible instructional materials enhance both teaching effectiveness and student engagement. Conclusion: The study recommends policy development by educational authorities to promote locally manufactured instructional materials across institutions, supporting practical learning approaches in technical education contexts. This paper complements retrospective approaches to researching informal learning in the workplace with experience sampling. Since (conscious) informal learning is becoming increasingly important for successfully keeping pace with rapid changes in working environments, a clear understanding of the construct and its precise measurement are essential. This is opposed by the error-proneness of retrospective measurements. The aim of this study was therefore to better understand how employees learn informally by situationally measuring their use of informal learning activities (e.g., searching the internet). Three hundred sixty four full-time employees with desk jobs in various professions completed short online questionnaires twice a day for 8 days about their current work task and the informal learning activities used. A Multilevel CFA with good model fit revealed the same three factors at the situation and person level: learning from oneself, learning from others, and learning from media. Thinking/reflection, professional exchange/co-working with colleagues, and sharing knowledge were most frequently reported. Learning activities with media were used comparatively little. These findings underscore the metacognitive role of reflection in informal learning, challenge previous models of informal learning that underrepresent situational antecedents and learning from media, and emphasize the importance of including multilevel data in research. Our research provides human resource development professionals and supervisors with a foundation for promoting informal learning and the society with basic knowledge for familiarizing students with the need for informal learning. This ability to adapt quickly to changing knowledge requirements is crucial to the competitiveness of many industries. © 2026 The Author(s). Purpose – The purpose of this study is to investigate the adoption and impact of activity-based learning (ABL) in the Information Studies department within Oman’s higher education sector. This study examines students ’ perceptions of ABL, its effectiveness in enhancing soft skills, creativity and innovation and the challenges faced in its application, particularly in Social Sciences. Design/methodology/approach – Using qualitative methods, focus group interviews were conducted with third- and fourth-year students at Sultan Qaboos University. Findings – The findings of this study reveal that ABL significantly enhances student engagement, practical knowledge and essential skill development. However, there is widespread dissatisfaction with its current implementation, and students advocate for its broader integration across courses. This study also identifies challenges such as theoretical content, faculty resistance and resource management as barriers to successful ABL implementation. This study investigates the impact of experimental demonstrations on the academic achievement, conceptual understanding, and attitudes toward science of third-grade students , with a focus on alternative energy topics. Conducted in an Arab-community middle school in Northern Israel, the research involved 120 students , divided equally into an experimental group (n = 60) and a control group (n = 60). The experimental group received instruction through hands-on demonstrations related to solar, wind, hydropower, biomass, and geothermal energy, while the control group was taught using traditional methods. Employing a mixed-methods design, data were collected through academic tests, attitudinal questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that students in the experimental group achieved significantly higher post-intervention scores (mean [M] = 82.62, standard deviation [SD] = 12.93) compared to the control group (M = 71.28, SD = 15.06), with a statistically significant difference (t [118] = -2.58, p < .01). Additionally, the experimental group demonstrated a significantly greater understanding of alternative energy concepts (M = 3.27, SD = 0.42) than the control group (M = 2.82, SD = 0.53), (t [58] = -3.42, p < .001). Attitudinal measures also favored the experimental group (M = 3.34, SD = 0.44) over the control group (M = 3.09, SD = 0.64), with a significant difference (t [118] = -2.12, p < .05). These results advocate for integrating demonstration-based teaching to enhance science education outcomes, particularly in sustainability topics. © © 2026 by authors;

This research investigates the effectiveness of Simulation-Based Learning (SBL) in enhancing student comprehension of complex mechanical engineering concepts, such as fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, FEA, and mechanics. The integration of tools like MATLAB, SolidWorks, ANSYS Fluent, AutoCAD, FluidSim, BricsCAD, and GeoGebra allows students to simulate theoretical mechanics and engineering graphics, bridging the gap between theory and practice. Additionally, Machine Learning playgrounds offer hands-on AI experience. A key novelty is the development of an Automatic Engineering Drawing Sheet Evaluation Algorithm, utilizing Python-based image processing to automate the assessment of technical drawings, increasing efficiency and accuracy. GeoGebra further serves as a tool for assessing geometric transformations in engineering graphics. Integrating simulation tools into the first-year Engineering Graphics course has significantly enhanced Course Outcomes (CO) and Program Outcomes (PO), particularly PO5 (Modern Tool Usage), with a 94.29% improvement. Tools like AutoCAD and GeoGebra have enhanced student understanding of Orthographic Projections and Isometric Views, reflected in improved test scores and positive feedback.
