This paper describes a research process that intends to develop a strategy to support initial programming learning. It is inspired in the theory of Matthew Lipman, as it was conceived through the redefinition of the concept of Learning Communities, to assist the students to maximize their learning through the conscientious evaluation of their level of self-efficacy, while they develop a better behavior to study programming. We present the results of the preliminary tests made to the proposed strategy, and the changes in the strategy that result from those results. © IEEE.

Entering research: A course that creates community and structure for beginning undergraduate researchers in the STEM disciplines

Undergraduate research experiences have been shown to enhance the educational experience and retention of college students, especially those from underrepresented populations. However, many challenges still exist relative to building community among students navigating large institutions. We developed a novel course called Entering Research that creates a learning community to support beginning undergraduate researchers and is designed to parallel the Entering Mentoring course for graduate students, postdocs, and faculty serving as mentors of undergraduate researchers. The course serves as a model that can be easily adapted for use across the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines using a readily avail- able facilitator's manual. Course evaluations and rigorous assessment show that the Entering Research course helps students in many ways, including finding a mentor, understanding their place in a research community, and connecting their research to their course work in the biological and physical sciences. Students in the course reported statistically significant gains in their skills, knowledge, and confidence as researchers compared with a control group of stu- dents, who also were engaged in undergraduate research but not enrolled in this course. In addition, the faculty and staff members who served as facilitators of the Entering Research course described their experience as rewarding and one they would recommend to their colleagues.

The role of superior education institutions on post-secondary (non superior) education

In Portugal, like in other European countries, people with strong professional competencies are encouraged to obtain higher education, no matter their age or their social condition. With their strong professional background and some theoretical aspects linked to scientific and technological domains, they become more helpful for the companies and for the society they belong. Considering these facts, the Portuguese Government developed specific legislation to attract new students for the technological higher education system. This legislation, intends to attract students older than 23, and also aims the improvement of technological education after the secondary school level. Pursuing this goal the Technological Specialization Courses (TSC) were created. The TSC are post-secondary, non superior training courses that will lead the students to obtain level 4 of professional training, according the 85/368/CEE decision of the European Union Council, published on the European Communities official journal. The TSC also allow people from different professional backgrounds to get technological training. The best students are allowed to access higher education in technological domains (basically in engineering fields) and/or to the job market relied with the country's technological industries. Before the beginning of a TSC, the students are submitted to technological tests to determine their profile, which will be taken into account on the initial training, before the starting of the TSC. In this paper, the success of TSC courses in Portuguese context is demonstrated, and the implementation of a successful partnership between University of Minho and the Technological Association for the Professional education of Beira Interior (AFTEBI) is shown. The illustration of the successful partnership is done by presenting a case study of a TSC in Industrial Maintenance where the best students can pursue their studies in University of Minho, in the Mechanical engineering Department in order to obtain a Mechanical engineering Degree. The main role of UMinho (as Superior education Institution) at different levels of this post-secondary (non superior) education is also discussed and highlighted. © 2010 IEEE.

Project-based learning in engineering higher education: Two decades of teaching competences in real environments

This paper presents an educational methodology of cooperative project-based learning. This methodology emerges in the final years of the undergraduate programme of the Technical University of Madrid. The paper focuses on the evolution of this experience up to its insertion in the European Higher education Area (EHEA), incorporating the project management competences of the International Project Management Association (IPMA) and broadening its scope to an entire educational strategy for undergraduate and graduate programmes. The results show how the methodology provides three main advantages: (1) it facilitates training in technical, personal, and contextual competences; (2) real problems in the professional sphere are dealt with; and (3) collaborative learning is facilitated through the integration of teaching and research. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The role of adult education in online delivery of career and technical education

As online education continues to grow, there is a consensus that online courses and programs should be designed based on the needs of adult learners. This premise is also relevant to growing career and technical education (CTE) programs offered online. However, much of the literature in online CTE lacks implicit connections to emerging notions of adult development and learning. This article provides an overview of the status of online education in CTE offered in higher education, and discusses adult learning development as a means to inform curriculum design and instruction. Features of industry-education collaboration in promoting lifelong learning for engineering educators of Malaysian polytechnics

The aim of this article is to explore the features of industrial-education collaboration through inservice attachment training programme for polytechnics' lectures in Malaysia. The programme was initiated as a call for lifelong learning due to information overload, the advent of high-functionality systems, and a climate of rapid technological change. These have created new problems and challenges for education and training in producing quality and employable technical graduates. The analysis is based on a survey conducted on 157 polytechnics lecturers and 140 employers using questionnaires. The results show the agreement on all the features of the collaboration which grounded in the work based learning theories. However in the existing context, there are several features salient to lifelong learning need to be improved for more effective experiential learning collaboration. Several suggestions are presented.

Training high vocational talents with school-enterprise cooperation: A case study

School-enterprise cooperation is the direction of reform and development of China's vocational education. This paper, taking Zhejiang College of Construction as an example, first surmises the way how train high vocational talents of civil engineering with school-enterprise cooperation. Then, some suggestions on school-enterprise cooperation are made. It is recommended that vocational colleges and enterprises should conduct all round cooperation, including design of talent cultivation program, establishment of courses system, selection of teaching content, construction of training base, organization of practical teaching, training of qualified worker and teacher, and Problem-solving of technological difficulties enterprise encountered etc. Second, Policies should be made to initiate the enthusiasm of enterprises. Long-term mechanism of cooperation should be established and financial support should be given to promote the efficiency cooperation. © 2010 IEEE.

An exploratory study on interns' communicative abilities: The industrial internship experience

Communication skills, other than specialized technology competency is a competency valued by employers. Universities are accountable in providing adequate communication skills for graduates to prepare them to face the challenging and changing industry. This study investigates the communication skills (oral and written) of interns from a private engineering and technology focused university in Malaysia. For a more comprehensive perspective, two sets of questionnaires are used to gather data from the interns and their respective industrial supervisors. Overall, the findings indicate that the interns possess high communicative abilities both in oral and written. Although the mean scores suggest that the interns had rated their communicative abilities higher than their industrial supervisors, t-test results show no significant difference between the two groups of respondents. Interestingly, no significant difference is found between interns from different academic programmes. The findings of this study indicate that the university may have prepared and groomed its students adequately to meet the needs of the current industries. Explanations for the findings are discussed in relation to the university's intake requirements, course syllabus, and university-industry collaborative initiatives. © 2010 IEEE.

Attracting minorities to engineering careers: Addressing the challenges from k-12 to post secondary education

As minority engineering educators at the undergraduate level, the authors of this paper are acutely in tune to the issues of attracting minority students to and graduating them from engineering curriculums. There is a definite challenge in the recruitment and retention of quality minority students in the engineering disciplines. It is time to address these challenges in truth and offer solutions that help to address the root causes of current problems. This paper looks at the two divisions of a students' academic career that have the most impact upon their undergraduate success; that is their k-12 foundational education and their first two years in college as an undergraduate. These two divisions are not mutually exclusive nor are they unaffected by outside influences. There are specifically three challenges that need be addressed if we are to seriously make an impact on attracting minorities to engineering careers. The solutions of which must come from a team of agents and processes, acting upon the students' life at decidedly different time intervals and all with a different focus. The first challenge is that of foundational mathematics and science and the critical time frame for the first challenge is that of between 4th and 6th grades. The second challenge is that of instilling a self motivated work ethic towards learning and the critical time frame is ideally 9th grade but no later than the beginning of the 11th grade. The third challenge is that of financial accountability and the critical time frame is from freshman through sophomore years at the undergraduate level. This paper peers into these real challenges of attracting minority students to engineering careers and offers the seeds for implementing solution plans. If a plan is formulated to address these challenges at the correct time frame, then not only will we be able to attract a greater pool of quality minority students to engineering but we will be producing better students overall. © American Society for engineering education, 2009.
