Review
Work-integrated learning (WIL) has gained significant attention in higher education for its impact on employability. This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of WIL research from 2002 to 2023, using data from 1,392 articles indexed in Scopus. The analysis highlights key trends, influential authors, institutions, and collaboration networks, revealing that WIL research has grown substantially, particularly since 2013. The findings underscore the dominance of Australian institutions and authors in the field and the multidisciplinary nature of WIL, which spans social sciences, business, engineering, and healthcare. Through co-authorship and cocitation analyses, this study identifies the central themes and most cited works that shape WIL research. The study also explores the global distribution of WIL research, noting strong collaborative networks, particularly between Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. By mapping the evolution of WIL research, this study provides a valuable reference for future studies, helping to guide research directions and deepen the understanding of WIL’s role in enhancing employability. ©: CC BY 4.0.

Reflection on the Structural Development of engineering Programmes in South African Higher education Institutions: Pre- and Post-1994

Book chapter
Almost all the literature related to engineering education tends to overlook the pre-1994 events and how they may have impacted the current curriculum of the engineering discipline in the South African context. The pre- and post-apartheid engineering curriculum evaluation has been a challenge because of weak episodical and often self-centred discussions related to the matter. There are difficulties in determining the ideological underpinnings of the engineering discipline in South Africa. Therefore, this chapter revisits some events that led to the gradual development of the engineering curriculum in South African higher education pre-1994 and how they shaped the present curriculum since the dawn of democracy. This chapter is based on a comprehensive literature review which traces and reflects on the evolution, role, and structure of the engineering discipline in South Africa pre- and post-1994. The chapter demonstrates through sound arguments that events outside the demarcations of higher education institutions, such as the socio-political and socio-economic events in South Africa, have principally determined curriculum development and changes in the engineering discipline. The chapter also outlines the engineering discipline’s past, present, and future opportunities. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Exploring Competency-Based education Experiences - A Design-Based Mixed-Methods Study

Conference paper Open Access
This research explores Competency-Based education (CBE) grading to address shortcomings in traditional grading systems. CBE emphasizes comprehensive skill mastery and offers a student-centered approach. The study implemented a CBE grading schema in a computer science course which allowed students to choose assignments aligned with their preferences and track their competence through feedback. Quantitative analysis revealed significant differences in student perceptions of interest, competence, and effort, with notable effect sizes. Qualitative data identified key challenges and successful strategies that led to design moves for improvement. Network analysis visualized correlations between student struggles, successful approaches, goal achievement, and Self-Determination Theory (SDT) principles. The study demonstrates the potential of CBE grading to enhance student autonomy and motivation while addressing traditional grading limitations. © ISLS.

Enhancing Real-World Skills Through Internships: A Qualitative Exploration

Book chapter
Higher education aims to prepare individuals for real- world challenges by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for employment. However, higher education institutions face significant challenges in aligning with global standards while addressing local needs and socio- economic crises. A holistic learning experience, characterised by experiential learning opportunities such as internships, is crucial for this preparation. This chapter explores the experiences of students, employers, and teachers with internships as a means of developing real- world skills. Using a qualitative approach, the study sampled 10 students, five teachers, and employers from five departments (education, business, computer science, engineering, and medicine). The findings highlight the role of internships in fostering professional success. Internships enhance skill proficiency, assist students in making informed career decisions, and provide practical learning experiences that are often unavailable in traditional classroom settings. © 2025 by IGI Global Scientific Publishing. The Secret of Flourishing: A Life Internship - Vocational High School Students Touch Lives

Book chapter
education is a process that endures in the lives of human beings from cradle to grave. However, conventional educational methods do not provide enough real- life experiences. Therefore, the significance of the educational approach of the famous American pedagogue John Dewey is increasing. A vocational school is a type of school that provides practical education rather than theory. In this context, the purpose of this chapter is to raise social awareness among students by allowing them to participate in social life. Students employed this project under the umbrella of improving their feelings of moral and cultural values. The study is qualitative, longitudinal, and comparatively validates students’ attitudes towards their vocational education. Data analysis was collected through observation, student interviews, and the researcher’s diary. The findings of the study indicated that students applied what they found out about their profession by rehearsing their future professional lives outside the classroom walls in an attempt to shed some light on their learning process. © 2025 by IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
