This paper explicates the codes that prescribe and shape the marine engineer student in times of massification and high attrition rates in Danish non-university higher education . In a case study of a Danish school of marine engineering , the Bernsteinian concept of knowledge structures and Legitimation Code Theory support analysing the official curriculum along with teacher and student interviews to determine what is considered knowledge and whose knowledge is deemed important. We find that teachers’ pedagogical decisions are embedded in the epistemological and social conventions of their individual educational backgrounds. Their struggles on content and pedagogic approach make it difficult for students to understand what is legitimate knowledge and who can claim to be a legitimate knower. To offer more students epistemic access to non-university academic study and increase student success, the epistemic and evaluative logics of the pedagogic discourses to which students are exposed must be clarified and made explicit. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

As technical and vocational education and training (TVET) continue to occupy a prominent position in Africa’s development, addressing the growing concerns about young women’s under-participation in science, technology, engineering , and mathematics (STEM)-related TVET has become urgent. This paper draws on the critical capability approach of vocational education and training (CCA-VET) to critique the TVET policy discourse on the participation of girls and women in STEM-related TVET. The paper employed the practical argumentation approach, a critical discourse analysis approach to achieve the paper’s aims. The paper’s central thesis is that for education policies to transform young women’s under-participation in STEM-related TVET, it is urgent to move beyond human rights-based, and human capital approaches to adopt a comprehensive theoretical approach, such as the critical capabilities approach. The paper concludes that breaking this hegemony of human rights and human capital approaches to TVET policy can be achieved by re-conceptualising TVET policy discourses. The re-conceptualisation of TVET policy discourses can be achieved by admitting the critiques of these dominant theories that underpin most TVET policies and then adopting the CCA-VET as a better alternative approach to framing TVET policies. © 2022 The Author(s). This article presents an overview of educational robotics (ER) in primary and preschool education . As ER seems to be gaining popularity for its effectiveness as a learning tool, more research needs to be done in this area. Recent results from ER pilot projects advocate for the integration of ER in K-12 education curricula. On the other hand, teachers may face various difficulties in carrying out such activities due to lack of experience or knowledge in this field. Previous research has shown that ER is still an open field for exploration. Even though an increasing number of experiences are available for the use of robotic tools in early education , there is not enough empirical evidence on the features they need to present for young learners to perceive them as attractive and easy to use. In addition, the high cost of some tools may prevent educational institutions from using them systematically. To detect possible gaps in the current research, in the context of this work, 21 articles representing ER applications and frameworks were collected and reviewed between 2011 and 2021. The results of this study demonstrate that ER can be a valuable tool for supporting primary and preschool students. However, the review supports that more research is needed on the technical features that a robotic tool must have to be successfully introduced to students of this age. Moreover, future work is needed to develop low-cost ER tools so they can become more accessible to educational institutions. © 2008-2011 IEEE.

Police education and training, in common with education at all levels, was seriously affected by the onset of lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. Police organisations in England and Wales sought to cope by moving training and education programmes online, almost overnight. This paper presents findings from interviews conducted with Learning and Development leaders in 17 police forces in England and Wales to gauge the capacity of organizations to provide blended learning (BL) in the pre COVID period and plans for the future. Findings indicated that although there are challenges, the appetite and capacity to adopt BL methods in forces range on a spectrum. The paper and makes recommendations to support the rollout and use of BL in police education generally and proposes a theory of change to assist the introduction of BL in police organisations. © 2023 The Author(s). In construction technology education (CTE), construction site tours play an essential role for undergraduate students to obtain familiarity with construction environments, combine content knowledge with practice, and develop their competencies to embrace construction innovations before entering the industry. Implementing real construction site visits for education purposes faces challenges in getting access to proper construction sites and ensuring the safety of visiting students. This study combined the application of Project-based learning (PBL), game-based learning (GBL), and deeper learning theories to develop TheProjectLive ePlatform for students to experience virtual site tours. In this platform, 360-degree panoramas were utilized to present the approximate complexity of construction sites and provide an immersive learning environment. The study evaluated the effects of the proposed virtual site tour approach through two years of implementation in a tertiary course: Introductory Construction Technology and Materials. The students' knowledge acquisition and learning experience when applying the ePlatform were well measured through in-class quizzes and questionnaire surveys, respectively. Based on the descriptive and statistical sources of evidence, the developed ePlatform for conducting the virtual construction site tour demonstrated its potential to effectively improve students' transferable knowledge acquisition. The results of two in-class quizzes designed to assess students' comprehension of content knowledge and their competency to solve practical problems showed that the average scores of students who experienced the virtual site tour were higher than students who learned via lecture notes. Specifically, the average scores of the former were 13.3% and 17.8% higher than the latter in the two quizzes, respectively. According to students' feedback, this case study research also provided suggestions to further improve the proposed virtual site tour approach in tertiary CTE, emphasizing the importance of clear content presentation as well as indicating the benefits of perceived helpfulness and well-designed game elements. © 2023 American Society of Civil Engineers.

An ongoing challenge for curriculum development in engineering programmes is ensuring that students graduate with appropriate writing skills. There is a need for effective and efficient integration of writing instruction within the engineering curriculum. Applied linguistics research provides valuable descriptions and understandings of the nature of writing for engineering purposes. This knowledge can be used to develop students’ ability to adapt their own writing style to meet the expectations of the context for which they are writing. As such, this paper proposes embedding the Teaching Learning Cycle, a pedagogic model of literacy development, within relevant curriculum approaches already in use in engineering education , with a focus on those that prioritise authentic learning environments. Suggestions for activities to develop writing ability are given in relation to the stages of the cycle. ©, Engineers Australia.

The pedagogical development (PD) for educators in higher engineering education is indispensable to the promotion of educational changes and high-quality teaching and learning necessary to train twenty-first century engineering talents. With the expansion of various PD activities in engineering education in recent decades, there is a growing need to understand the characteristics and impact of current PD activities and to develop strategies for their further development. This study reviews 116 articles to provide an overview of current PD activity designs and the challenges reported in research on engineering education . The selected papers’ frameworks, duration and organizational formats, evaluation methods, teachers’ learning outcomes, research methods, and reported challenges are summarized. The findings of this study call for additional research on theory-driven designs for future PD activities as well as additional empirical PD studies using multiple data sources, a variety of research methods, and various analytical tools. © 2024 The Author(s). Ethical and sustainable thinking is an important competence in the engineering education to support students’ abilities to act and perform in a responsible manner in corporate contexts, and consequently contribute to a sustainable future. This paper investigates engineering students’ attitudes towards ethical and sustainable thinking focusing on the corporate social responsibility (CSR) principles in the context of entrepreneurship courses as a part of larger research project. engineering students from a Finnish and an Estonian university (N = 342) responded to a self-assessment survey. The students’ attitudes towards CSR principles were assessed both on the enterprise level and the individual level as expectations of potential future employees. The findings indicate that engineering students acknowledge the need to take into account responsible thinking and that it is important for enterprises to be both socially and environmentally responsible in their activities. The self-assessment tool of ethical and sustainable thinking associated with the entrepreneurship competence model and CSR principles can be helpful in practice when university teachers wish to support and assess their students’ attitudes towards CSR principles among other entrepreneurship competencies when creating new course content. © 2024 The Author(s). On the academic level of education , Traditional Lecturing represents the primary means of conveying information to the class. At the same time, Project-based learning is one of the major research subjects in engineering education , and literature claims it can offer more authentic and meaningful learning experiences. Supported by the most recent advances in syntheses of meta-analyses in education and neuroscientific-based educational sciences, the study presented compares Traditional Lecturing and two versions of Project-based learning implemented with variations in content and project typologies through a single-group variation on the two-group post-test-only randomized experiment. Two research hypotheses were investigated using three questionnaires and a test: I) the learning experience and outcomes are enhanced when attending Project-based learning lessons compared to Traditional Lecturing ones; II) effective cross-cutting instructional elements are more detectable in Project-based learning than in Traditional Lecturing and variations in contents and typologies of project do not lead to different outcomes within Project-based learning. The research was carried out in an engineering course and involved 80 students. The results show that Project-based learning outperforms Traditional Lecturing and highlight the crucial role of some cross-cutting instructional features that are detectable or missing within the two methodologies. Derived from meta-analyses and neuroscientific-based educational sciences, these features represent a solid pedagogical core within the structure of the Project-based learning methodology. We argue they have a relevant role in the stability and enhancement of the results of Project-based learning in comparison with Traditional Lecturing. Indeed, despite variations in content and project typologies, Project-based learning produces similar results. Finally, for engineering teachers wishing to adopt Project-based learning, this study provides insights into the necessity to understand, consciously incorporate, support, and manipulate such particular features, especially through developing pedagogical competence based on scientific evidence. © 2024, Rajarambapu Institute Of Technology. engineering students are expected to develop their professional skills throughout the course of their degrees. Yet, there is no clear consensus among educators of which skills are being developed or how this is done effectively. This scoping review has been produced to draw together and disseminate information on effective techniques for developing six specific professional skills (communication, teamwork, problem solving, leadership, project management and entrepreneurship) and tracing the evolution of these skills in engineering education . Using search engines and backwards and forwards snowballing, a scoping literature review on skills development in engineering was conducted, encompassing a 40-year time span (1980–2020). Specified search terms, and inclusion criteria were applied, and findings have been presented quantitatively and qualitatively. In total, 165 studies were included. Key findings indicate skills are more nuanced and accepted today than they were in 1980, with an increased focus on specific skill areas. Additionally, more sophisticated integrated delivery methods are used to teach skills, although short courses remain popular. By synthesising data in this way, professional educators can identify what skill areas to focus on, and how to teach these skills for effective development among students. Gaps in knowledge are also identified through this review. This study is significant in that it has created an exceptionally useful roadmap of skills development, which is of benefit to the engineering community and beyond. © 2024 The Author(s).
