This research was conducted to analyze the application, utilization or use of AI chatbots in the education sector based on several previous studies. Bibliometric analysis is used to identify the current status of research and critical points in bibliometric data mapping can help predict future research trends. Data searches were carried out on the Scopus database with the keywords "Chatbot" AND "education " with a research year range of 2007-2024. There were 376 articles found. The research results show that research on chatbots, especially in the education sector, is increasingly in demand. In 2023 there will be a drastic increase in the number of studies regarding chatbots in the education sector compared to previous years. This is because chatbots are considered to be an interesting tool to use in education because they enable a more innovative teaching process in terms of improving learning processes and outcomes. There are 25 countries that have contributed to related research, with the United States, Australia, United Kingdom, China and Taiwan in the top five. This research also shows that there are 26 subject areas that have used chatbots in the education sector. The use of chatbots in the education sector has advantages and disadvantages. With the completion of this research, it is hoped that it can become material for consideration for related research. © 2024 Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia.

This research investigates trends in technology-supported project-based learning (PjBL) in science, technology, and engineering education and also provides future research directions in this field. Bibliometric analysis with Scopus database sources in the period 2004-2023 was used in this investigation. 541 publications met the criteria, with the annual growth of publications increasing based on the number of documents and citations. American and Asian countries are the most productive countries and affiliates in publications in this field. Most publications are produced from international conferences. The publication's conceptual structure shows four research clusters with 81 terms, 1029 links, and a total link strength of 3492. The term "project-based learning" is the central node in the cluster, connecting several essential terms related to the use of technology in PjBL. The discussion at the end of this study leads to recommended further research paths for developing technology-supported PjBL. © 2024 Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia.

Educational robotics (ER) is a constructivist approach to education that promotes experiential learning through actual activities for teaching and learning science, technology, engineering , and mathematics (STEM) subjects. Empirical findings have indicated that primary school students have limited interest in learning mathematics due to the inability to rationalize real-world applications without practical application. Therefore, this study aims to determine the implications of using ER to evaluate their effect on primary school students’ mathematics learning achievement, interest, and attitude. A total of 40 respondents from year five participated in this quasi-experimental study that explored the difference between using ER and PowerPoint hands-on methods as instructional approaches to complement teaching and learning. The findings indicated that ER improved mathematics learning achievement and perceived interest with a high effect size, and students also indicated a positive attitude toward using ER to aid in learning mathematics. © 2024, Grand Canyon University. As computational thinking becomes increasingly essential, the challenge of designing effective teaching approaches to foster students’ abilities in this area persists, especially for higher order thinking skills. This study addresses this challenge by proposing and implementing a peer assessment-based Scrum project (PA-SP) learning approach in university computer programming learning. The approach involves dividing 98 third-year college students into an experimental group, which employs the PA-SP approach, and a control group, which uses the conventional Scrum project (C-SP) approach. The study investigates the impact of the PA-SP approach on students’ programming projects, learning motivation, project collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and cognitive load. The results demonstrate that the PA-SP approach significantly enhances learning achievement and motivation while also improving collaboration, communication, and critical thinking. By providing practical insights into effective teaching strategies to promote students’ computational thinking, this research has significant implications for improving programming education in universities. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2023.

Science, Technology, engineering , and Mathematics (STEM) education is essential for developing future-ready learners in both secondary and higher education levels. However, as students transition to higher education , many encounter challenges with independent learning and research. This can negatively impact their Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), engagement, and practical expertise. This study introduces a solution: Computational Thinking Scaffolding (CTS) in the Jupyter Notebook environment, designed to enhance STEM education at the tertiary level. CTS incorporates five phases: Decomposition, Pattern Recognition, Abstraction, Algorithm Design, and Evaluation. Utilizing a quasi-experimental method, we assessed the impact of CTS on the HOTS, engagement, and practical skills of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Our findings hold substantial relevance for university educators, academic advisors, and curriculum designers aiming to enhance students’ HOTS and hands-on capabilities in STEM disciplines. The results validate the effectiveness of CTS in elevating tertiary STEM learning outcomes, and they spotlight the adaptability of the Jupyter Notebook as a valuable tool in higher education . In conclusion, our research underscores the merits of CTS for improving outcomes in higher STEM education and sets a benchmark for future endeavors in this domain. © The Author(s) 2023.

Experiential learning through active exploration can play a vital role in fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills in engineering education . However, the complex nature of the construction industry in the 21st century cannot afford an education through trial and error in a real environment. This case study aims to promote experiential learning in construction engineering education by designing, implementing, and empirically evaluating a novel gamified pedagogy that directs students to discover systematic solutions for fundamental construction engineering problems. The game-based pedagogy was implemented in the context of construction project scheduling. The proposed pedagogical method and its gamified elements are designed based on the constructivism learning theory and are grounded in state-of-the-art literature through research-based instructional strategies and conceptual frameworks. A scenario-based interactive game, called Zebel, was developed using the Unity game engine. Using a series of preassessment and postassessment instruments, the method was implemented and evaluated in a graduate-level course for construction planning and scheduling to collect empirical data. The outcomes of this case study indicated that the pedagogy successfully guided students with no background and prior knowledge in construction scheduling to discover the fundamental concepts and systematic solutions for the given problems. Although the focus of this study is on construction scheduling, the proposed pedagogy based on active exploration in an interactive game environment can be adopted in other contexts in construction education . © 2023 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Apart from having specific knowledge, graduates are expected to possess a set of soft and hard skills to be employed. This study aims to identify soft and hard skills relevant to the future workforce in the electrical and electronic (E&E) industry based on two perspectives; academicians from public higher education institution (HEI) and E&E industry players. Further, the study aims to investigate skills gaps between two stakeholders. A total of 50 academicians and 31 industry players in Malaysia were surveyed using a structured questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using an independent t-test. In terms of soft skills, analytical thinking skills, communication skills, and discipline were more perceived by academicians, whereas decision-making skills, teamwork skills, and discipline were more favored by industry players. For hard skills, both players favored technology use, except for organizational capabilities which were perceived more by academicians while troubleshooting was favored more by industry players. This study contributes to the collaboration between public HEI and the E&E industry to address the skills gaps, which will benefit all stakeholders. This study investigates the association between the personality traits of academic staff members and their job performance in a Malaysian private educational institution. The personality traits were based on the Big Five model, which has five dimensions: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. About 110 participants from this institution were surveyed using a quantitative questionnaire, and their data were gathered. Throughout the study, the data were examined utilizing multiple regression analysis and factor analysis. According to the study’s findings, conscientiousness, and openness to experience significantly positively affect job performance. However, it was determined that extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism were not statistically significant and had no connection to job performance. As a result, in this institution, openness to experience is the most essential predictor of job performance. The findings of this study showed the management that openness to experience and conscientiousness are crucial for improving job performance inside the institution. Therefore, the management should pay more attention to these areas and recruit new employees with openness to experience and conscientious personality traits. © 2024, Institute of Advanced engineering and Science. Contributions: This article provides valuable insights into the varying approaches of engineering students in their understanding and application of project-based learning (PBL) and its relationship with student success. The findings can be used to improve the design and implementation of effective learning environments, evaluate the effectiveness of engineering education programs, and advance the current understanding of the relationship between PBL and knowledge acquisition in engineering . Background: Previous research has demonstrated that PBL has become a significant teaching and learning method in engineering education . It has resulted in considerable progress in students' problem-solving and critical thinking skills, teamwork, and technical concept communication. However, there is still a lack of exploration on how engineering students perceive PBL from their standpoint and how their conceptions influence student learning. This study aims to contribute to the currently limited comprehension of PBL from the students' perspective. Research Questions: What are the qualitatively different ways engineering students conceptualize PBL, and how does PBL contribute to knowledge and skill acquisition? Methodology: A phenomenographic approach was used to gather data from engineering students who had experienced PBL in their course. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather rich and detailed data about the students' conceptions of PBL. The data was then analyzed using a phenomenographic framework to identify how engineering students conceived PBL. Findings: Students' conceptions of PBL are not uniform but vary in five different pedagogical beliefs that shape how they act in the PBL environment. The different conceptions of PBL in engineering education suggest that instructors need to communicate the learning objectives of PBL more clearly to students, and design PBL activities that cater to the diverse needs and expectations of students. © 1963-2012 IEEE.
