Proactive university students' views on skills gained from a research colloquium

Research is a key component of higher education, promoting deep learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. The Academic Body of engineering and Systems (InySis) organizes the colloquium of research initiation: proactive university students (CIIEUPA) each academic cycle (A and B) to foster research as a fundamental tool for students’ educational and professional development. This qualitative, descriptive study aimed to determine the skills acquired by students participating in CIIEUPA. The action-research methodology was employed, with participant observation used as the data collection technique. The sample consisted of second and third-semester students from the Software engineering Competence Unit from the 2022A and 2022B cycles. The results revealed that participation in the colloquium enriched students with experiences that fostered teamwork, effective communication, critical thinking, and leadership. CIIEUPA, as an active collaborative learning methodology, allowed students to share their findings with the academic community, strengthening their commitment, and motivation toward research. Such initiatives contribute to learning and play a crucial role in the holistic development of students, promoting their growth in both academic and professional fields. This approach demonstrates the value of integrating research into the educational process, allowing students to engage meaningfully with their discipline while developing essential skills for their future careers. © 2025 Institute of Advanced engineering and Science. Educational application of virtual reality in English education in vocational colleges: a bibliometric analysis

Virtual reality (VR) technology has been widely adopted in education field for a period and its application keeps developing continuously. The bibliometric analysis was conducted to provide a comprehensive understanding of VR technology application about research strengths, research theme, scope, hot topics and evolution to enrich further study on VR technology adoption in English education in vocational colleges. The search of literature over the past decade in the Web of Science (WoS) database and 930 articles remained based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Subsequently, VOSviewer used to analyze data from selected articles. The study finds out that research on VR technology shows an upward trend. The influential country is China, while most research institutions and authors are also from China. Research topics were identified using keyword co-occurrence analysis and four thematic clusters emerged: i) positive impact of VR on English education; ii) VR used in English education for special purpose; iii) VR is used in actual situation with the consideration of its’ features and positive effect; and iv) users’ acceptance of VR. The findings highlight current developments and offer guidance for promoting VR technology utilization in English education. Furthermore, educators could use the findings to design more effective VR-integrated curricula. © 2025 Institute of Advanced engineering and Science. All rights reserved.

Creative thinking enhancement through project-based learning in science: a meta-analytic review

This research investigates the impact of project-based learning (PjBL) on enhancing students’ creative thinking abilities through a comprehensive meta-analytic study. Creative thinking is recognized as an integral part of higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) required for success. Employing the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA), studies published between 2014 and 2024 were identified and synthesized from the Scopus database. Data analysis, conducted with R, assessed the impact of PjBL using effect size (ES) measurements. The findings demonstrate that PjBL significantly improves creative thinking skills compared to traditional teaching methods. Moderator analysis revealed that variables such as educational level, subject area, and learning model influence the outcomes, with the highest impact observed in high school and inquiry-driven subjects like physics. Variations of PjBL, including technology-enhanced models, such as Google Classroom-based approaches, further amplified its effectiveness, particularly in virtual learning environments. This study highlights PjBL’s adaptability and robust potential in fostering creativity and innovation across diverse educational contexts. The results provide practical implications for educators in designing tailored PjBL strategies to cultivate students’ creative thinking, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and technological integration in modern education. © 2025 Institute of Advanced engineering and Science. Let’s be a chef! The antecedents of chef’s key competencies for vocational school students

Chefs are considered a factor in the success of a culinary tourism business. Therefore, mastering the chef’s key competencies (CKC) through vocational high schools is very important. Many studies have examined the competence of chefs. Still, the mechanism for getting key competency chefs involving industry commitment (IC), social support (SS), vocational teaching quality (TQ), and occupational self-efficacy (OSE) of culinary student chefs has not been discussed clearly. This study investigates the antecedents of the mastery of key chef competencies for vocational school students. This study involved 392 culinary students at seven vocational schools in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data was collected by proportional random sampling through a questionnaire. Amos 18 software is used for structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis. The study’s results revealed that the mastery of the chef’s critical competencies for students was directly and significantly influenced by IC, quality of vocational teaching, and OSE of chefs. In addition, chef OSE is a mediator on the influence of IC, SS, and quality of vocational teaching on mastering the chef’s critical competencies for culinary students. This study’s findings discuss in depth some of the implications for vocational education practitioners that are proposed for further improvement. © 2025 Institute of Advanced engineering and Science. Reflective writing skills among pre service teachers: a scoping review

Reflection is a soul-searching process. It is an innate ability to delve down the memory lane to judge a reaction to a particular situation as right or wrong as a response. The positive reactions are reinforced and the ineffective negative ones are relinquished. Developing reflective skills among preservice teachers include regular reflective practice sessions. They have to painstakingly record all their reflections after the delivery of each lesson as part of their curriculum along with other reflective practice opportunities. This effort should lead to evolution of professional practitioner in the long run. Although, there are factors affecting its development, preservice teachers seem to do it more monotonously without much reflective learning. Their reflective writing skills are way behind the expected level. This study adopts the research design outline advocated by Arksey and O’Malley. The study appraised the research studies conducted from 2015 to 2024 as a part of scoping review. The study throws light on the various aspects related to the teacher-trainees’ reflective writing skills. Six-Sigma approach to improve industry engagement strategies in Malaysian apprenticeship program

This empirical study develops an industry engagement model (IEM) by using the Six-Sigma define, measure, analyze, improve, and control (DMAIC) methodology to investigate the key strategies to enhance industry participation (IP) in the Malaysian apprenticeship program known as the National Dual Training System (NDTS). The relationship between five strategies, namely financial incentives (FI), digital administration (DA), productive collaboration (PC), flexible implementation (FT), and efficient promotion (EP) on IP, was examined. The 204 returned questionnaires were analyzed using partial least square-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The findings reveal that FT, EP, and DA strongly influence IP in the NDTS program. In contrast, improvement in FI and PC has little impact on industry involvement. The development of IEM by demonstrating the DMAIC concept is novel and new to the research. It offers enormous potential and value in improving policymakers’ decision-making in apprenticeship programs. Developing Sustainability Competencies Through Active Learning Strategies Across School and University Settings

The transition toward sustainable production requires engineering and science education to adopt active, interdisciplinary, and practice-oriented teaching strategies. This article presents a comparative analysis of two educational initiatives implemented in Panama aimed at fostering sustainability competencies at the university and secondary school levels. The first initiative, developed at the Technological University of Panama, integrates project-based learning and circular economy principles into an extracurricular module focused on production planning, sustainable design, and quality management. Students created prototypes using recycled HDPE and additive manufacturing technologies within a simulated startup environment. The second initiative, carried out in two public secondary schools, applied project- and challenge-based learning through the Design Thinking framework, supporting teachers and students in addressing real-world sustainability challenges. Both programs emphasize hands-on learning, creativity, and iterative development, embedding environmental awareness and innovation in both formal and informal educational settings. The article identifies key opportunities and challenges in implementing active methodologies for sustainability education. Challenges such as limited infrastructure and rigid schedules were identified, along with lessons learned for future implementation. Students connected local issues to global goals like the SDGs and saw themselves as agents of change. These initiatives offer practical models for advancing sustainability education through innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. © 2025 by the authors.

Stem-oriented Project-based Assignments in teaching Systems Thinking Subject for engineering Students in Vietnam

Systems Thinking is a necessary subject for engineering students to develop their logical and systematic mindset. At Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and education, Vietnam, the Systems Thinking subject is implemented with many teaching methods including STEM approach. Through carrying out STEM-oriented project-based assignments (SPAs), students develop their technical/ professional competence and soft skills including communication skill, presentation skill and team work skill. Besides, their learning motivation/ learning interest is also improved. According to the survey results with 150 students who underwent the Systems Thinking subject in the school years from 2021 to 2023, the STEM skills as well as systems thinking of engineering students at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and education have been better after the educational experiments. The paper also proposes some solutions for lecturers to overcome the challenges in implementing SPAs related to course time management, difficulty in choosing SPA topics, money cost and material costs for learning products, conflicts of students in teamwork. Recommendations are that lecturers should design SPA topics that are relevant to learning objectives linked with the socio-technical/professional context, limit the number of SPAs (no more than two or three projects for each subject per semester), use both large and small projects instead of only large projects, encourage the use of recycled materials. Lecturers should give fair support for different groups of students and restructure learning groups when necessary to create a favorable learning atmosphere. The STEM-oriented project-based assignments can be one of the forms of teaching organization, that brings benefits for implementing many other subjects in engineering education. © 2025, Rajarambapu Institute Of Technology. Vocational education is designed with learning that is relevant to the industrial sector. In learning activities, teaching materials are essential to support learning goals. The study aimed to identify the effectiveness of the E-module and learning style on application learning to increase the occupational safety and health knowledge for vocational education. This research is quantitative on variables bound between variables. The population of the study are all students of the education machine engineering faculty that have taken the Health and Safety course in the academic year 2023/2024. The methods used to collect the data needed in the research are R and D, which include developing instruments; lesson plans, practice questions, and quizzes; pre-test and post-test questions, learning style questionnaires, and E-module. The research results show that the E-module increases the effective health and safety work learning achievements, and with that, the style of learning lacking learning effectiveness in improving health and safety work depends on methods and the use of the E-module. Simultaneously, E-module and learning-style learning achievements effectively increase health and safety, especially for the visual learning style; the effectiveness of the E-module has a good outcome. Design and Implementation of an Intelligent Operating Room Nursing Training Platform

With the rapid development of medical technology and the increasing demand for medical care, the professional skills of medical staff are also increasing. Traditional nursing skills training mainly relies on theoretical teaching and limited clinical practice, however, due to the shortage of clinical resources and the impact of patient safety issues, the practice opportunities for medical students and working nurses are significantly reduced. This problem has attracted extensive attention at home and abroad, and how to use modern technology to make up for the lack of practical training has become an important topic in the field of medical education. In recent years, the application of virtual simulation technology in the field of medical training has shown great potential. In foreign countries, such as the”Visible Human Project” supported by the National Library of Medicine of the United States and the virtual surgical training system developed by Stanford University, 3D modeling and interactive technology have been successfully applied to anatomy teaching and surgical simulation. In contrast, domestic related research started a little later, but developed rapidly, such as the virtual puncture training system of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, the VR nursing operation platform of the PLA General Hospital, etc., all of which have confirmed the value of virtual training in improving operation proficiency and reducing teaching risks. However, the existing systems generally have problems such as insufficient specialization, unreal physical feedback, and single training programs, which are difficult to fully meet the needs of nursing skills training. This platform uses the Unity3D development engine to design and implement a professional nurse intelligent training platform. Adopt virtual simulation technology to facilitate the training of nursing-related skills. With 3DMax modeling, the platform enables several key capabilities, including medical procedure simulation, surgical simulation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills training, IV simulation, and mock exam practice. The platform not only bridges the gap between computer technology and nursing practice teaching, but also solves the problem of insufficient practical opportunities for medical students during clinical internships, ultimately improving the professional skills of medical staff. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s)
