This study examines the effectiveness of Smart Home Training Kits in enhancing higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) among vocational education students. The research follows a quasi-experimental design involving two groups: an experimental group utilizing Smart Home Training Kits and a control group employing traditional instructional methods. Pre-tests and post-tests were administered to evaluate improvements in critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. Results indicate a significant improvement in HOTS within the experimental group, demonstrating superior performance in analyzing, evaluating, and synthesis of potential solutions related to smart home concepts. Furthermore, the Smart Home Training Kits provided detailed, practical insights into technical principles, allowing students to gain a more realistic understanding of complex topics. The findings suggest that integrating Smart Home Training Kits into vocational curricula could bridge the gap between theory and practice, fostering critical thinking and innovation skills essential in addressing modern workplace challenges. © 2025; Los autores.

Evaluative feedback isn’t enough: harnessing the power of consequential feedback in higher education

Most research on feedback in higher education focuses on evaluative feedback and its recipience, uptake, and enactment. Evaluative feedback information includes judgments, critiques and suggestions for improvement provided by a teacher, peer, self, pre-programmed automatic feedback, or artificial intelligence tutoring systems. In contrast, we elaborate the neglected concept of consequential feedback. Consequential feedback offers information about the natural effect (consequence) of an action, such as getting burned when touching a hot stove, eliciting a laugh (or not) from a comedy routine, or the trajectory of a newly designed model rocket. This information is available during (simulated) professional/disciplinary/social practice when using professional or disciplinary tools or systems (e.g. stoves), audiences, clients, or products (e.g. comedy routines or rockets). We discuss how this concept builds on and extends the literature on feedback in higher education. We draw on examples from the health professions, business, mathematics and the arts to illustrate how we can harness the power of consequential feedback to create more impactful feedback. We centre educational simulations, first considering how non-human actors offer consequential feedback and then how human interactions embedded in role plays present consequential feedback. Personal values matter: international students’ university selection

Although personal values are considered the critical psychological factor influencing individuals’ motivation, behavior, and preferences, their role in influencing international students’ university selection criteria has been largely overlooked. To fill this gap, 47 international students at a private Southwest university in the United States were interviewed and analyzed through the Means-End Chain (MEC) approach. The Hierarchical Value Model shows that achievement, self-direction (thought and action), security (personal and societal), and hedonistic values were the most important values influencing their choices. By adopting the MEC approach, this study contributes to education psychology literature by highlighting the importance of personal values in determining international students’ university selection criteria. © 2024 Society for Research into higher education.

Navigating the challenges and future pathways of STEM education in Asia-Pacific region: A comprehensive scoping review

STEM education is crucial for driving economic growth, fostering technological innovation, and addressing global challenges in the Asia-Pacific region. In 2023, Malaysia and India emerged as leading contributors to STEM education. Malaysia excels with approximately 43.5% of tertiary students earning STEM degrees, while India, with 34.0% of its students in STEM, tops the global charts in STEM graduates due to its massive population of about 1.4 billion. With nine of the top ten emerging jobs by 2025 projected to be in STEM fields, these nations are well-positioned to meet future workforce demands. Recognizing this, we examined key challenges in STEM education and calls for strategic investments to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. We leveraged the PRISMA-ScR framework and content analysis of literature from 2010 to 2024, identifying seven STEM education challenges across all levels of educational institutions: Teaching practices, learning approaches, gender disparities, location, career interest, student enrollment, and student soft skills. The most pressing challenges in STEM education are teaching practices, learning approaches, and gender disparities, with issues most pronounced at the secondary school level and continuing into higher education. The study‘s findings advance theoretical understanding of STEM education obstacles and provide a foundation for further research. Practically, this work offers crucial insights for educators, policymakers, and stakeholders, enabling the development of targeted interventions to improve teaching quality, enhance learning experiences, and foster gender inclusivity in STEM. Addressing these issues is vital to advancing Sustainable Development Goal 4, promoting a more accessible, equitable, and impactful STEM education across the Asia-Pacific region. This study thus enriches the literature on the challenges of STEM education by offering a comprehensive, unbiased review of past research, drawing broader conclusions, and outlining pathways for future exploration. © 2025 AIMS Press.

Online learning at a South African University: early career academic experiences

The South African Department of higher education has emphasised the use of online learning (e-learning). Educational technology resources were used for e-learning, replacing face-to-face learning during the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Consequently, with this transition and new developments in learning technologies, early career academics (ECAs) in one of the universities in South Africa faced various challenges in teaching language modules online. This qualitative case study intended to explore the experiences of ECAs in teaching language modules at a university during the transition from face-to-face to online learning. Data is generated from five ECAs who were purposively and conveniently sampled from the School of education using reflective journals, and one-on-one semi-structured interviews. The technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) theory is used to guide the study towards understanding ECAs’ knowledge of technology, content, and pedagogy during online teaching of language modules. The Findings indicate that some of the ECAs expressed that online learning was not effective. The majority maintained that the online learning approach was effective. Nevertheless, there were numerous limitations, such as accessibility to technological devices (laptops), and language teacher’s state of readiness in adapting to the new approach. Therefore, more professional development programmes should be conducted and studies highlighting ECAs experiences. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Identity formation and conflicting priorities of early career academics studying the Academic Professional Apprenticeship in England

The Academic Professional Apprenticeship (APA) has emerged in recent years as a new avenue for early career academic staff to develop into their roles. While much of the content may be similar, as an apprenticeship, the requirements and structure of the APA differ from other routes for supporting early career academic staff such as a Postgraduate Certificate in higher education. The purpose of this paper is to explore the conflicting priorities of early career academics studying the Academic Professional Apprenticeship and to consider how this programme of study has influenced their identity formation. This article discusses qualitative interviews with 11 apprentices nearing the end of their studies, about their identity and experiences. A flexible inductive framework approach was taken to analyse the data, with multiple coders deployed to increase the validity and reliability of the findings. Key findings suggest that the identity of the apprentice is a multifaceted one, with a reluctance to identify explicitly as an apprentice, often preferring the more discreet title of being a student or, simply, studying. Elements such as teaching pressures, intrusion into research productivity and historical perspectives of what an apprenticeship is, all contribute to the formation of personal identities. © 2024 The Author(s). Why did I choose these studies? Decisions of students with disabilities in Spanish higher education

The choice of higher education studies is a key moment for students with disabilities. In this line, the progressive increase in the number of students with disabilities at Spanish universities implies an imminent need to delve further into the reasons that have led them to choose university studies. A total of 91 university graduates with disabilities from different Spanish universities participated in this study. The data were obtained through semi-structured individual interviews and, subsequently, a mixed methods analysis was carried out. On the one hand, the obtained qualitative results indicate that decision-making is mainly based on personal interest. A significant proportion of respondents also referred to other factors, including family, disability and specialisation. On the other hand, the quantitative results define significant associations between various factors, such as gender, type of disability and area of expertise. In conclusion, these results are relevant in terms of guaranteeing the university success of students with disabilities, since, although the choice of degree is a complex issue due to the diversity of factors involved, having this information would allow universities to anticipate in order to favour their vocational development. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Using Adobe Creative Cloud to create multimedia content in higher education institutions; Uso de Adobe Creative Cloud para crear contenido multimedia en instituciones de educación superior

Introduction: digital content is a powerful tool for enhancing students’ interest in the learning process. The aim of the work is to determine the effectiveness of using Adobe Creative Cloud to create multimedia content in higher education institutions (HEIs). Method: the research employed the methods of observation, deduction, Thurstone scale, calculations of priority coefficient, knowledge coefficient and Student’s coefficient. Results: it was established that during training, Adobe Creative Cloud can be used to conduct theoretical and practical classes and develop students’ creative skills. It was established that charts (p(c)=1,2) and illustrations (p(c)=1,1) have the greatest importance in the created content for students’ perception. Textual information is less important for the perception of educational materials (p(c)=0,73). The students were found to perceive learning using Adobe Creative Cloud at a high level, which is associated with not overloading students with unnecessary materials and ensuring visual perception. The authors determined that students of Group 1 (Software Engineering) and Group 2 (History) achieved high academic results — (J=1,01), (J=1,0), respectively. Conclusions: the practical significance of the work is the possibility of expanding students’ approaches to building professional competence on the basis of content created using Adobe Creative Cloud. © 2025; Los autores.

African international students, work integrated learning and (im)possible selves in Chinese higher education

This article explores a small number of African international students’ narratives on their identity work through work-integrated learning (WIL) in Chinese higher education. Applying a sociological use of the ‘possible selves’ concept to interview data, the findings show that individual participants accumulate a pool of like-to-be, aspire-to-be and like-to-avoid selves through navigating their WIL programs, which are reflective of the sociocultural, where the physical spaces young people inhabit (e.g. nation-states, family, schooling and employment) contribute to what selves are (im)possible for them, which are probable, which are ideal and which are feared. This study moves beyond the overwhelming dominance of the pragmatic and utilitarian aspects of WIL as merely enhancing student employability and competitiveness in current research, as I articulate the value of WIL in critical awareness raising and sense of (professional) self-making, which is an important, yet often hidden, outcome of WIL. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Integrating Mastery Adaptive and Problem-Solving (MAPS) Digital Technology Skills into a Thai Community College Student Learning Model

Background/purpose. The increasing integration of digital technology in education underscores the need for instructional models that support personalized, skill-based, and problem-solving-focused learning. While traditional pedagogies often fail to address these needs comprehensively, this study proposes that the Mastery Adaptive Problem-Solving (MAPS) Model offers an innovative solution for enhancing digital technology skills (DTS) and academic achievement (AA) among Thai community college students. Materials/methods. The MAPS Model incorporates mastery learning, micro-learning, adaptive learning, and problem-based learning (PBL) into a six-step framework. Expert validation of the model was conducted using the Connoisseurship method via focus group discussions. A quasi-experimental design was employed to evaluate the model's implementation with 19 second-year Thai community college students. Student DTS and AA were measured using validated tools with reliability indices exceeding 0.80. Retention of skills and knowledge was assessed 14 days post-instruction. Results. Experts rated the MAPS Model highly for utility, feasibility, appropriateness, and accuracy. After implementation, students' DTS significantly exceeded the set threshold (70%), with statistical significance at the .01 level. Additionally, students demonstrated significantly higher AA post-instruction than pre-instruction levels, at the .01 significance level. Retention analysis revealed no significant decline in DTS or AA 14 days after program completion. Conclusion. The MAPS Model effectively integrates innovative pedagogical strategies to enhance DTS and AA in community college settings. Its structured, adaptable framework addresses diverse learner needs, ensuring immediate and sustained educational benefits. © The Author(s), 2025.
