The development of Augmented Reality (AR) technology has proliferated in the educational arena. The results of subjective observations of engineering mechanics learning show the decline in student interest and understanding caused by conventional teaching methods, which are the biggest obstacles in the learning process, thus impacting students’ cognitive abilities. This study develops AR as an instructional media for engineering mechanics using the Analyse, State, Select, Utilise, Require, and Evaluate (ASSURE) instructional design model with an R&D approach. This study used performance assessment instruments, questionnaires, and interviews with students and lecturers as the primary data. The subjects of this study were 103 students of Mechanical engineering Vocational education at Universitas Negeri Padang in the 2020–2021 academic year. The results showed that the use of AR-based learning media had a positive impact on students’ understanding of basic concepts and skills. In addition, AR media support independent learning and provide direct feedback to students. The acquisition of validation results from material experts is 88.48% (very valid), media experts of 89.26% (very valid), and linguists of 87.41% (very valid). The average practicality test results from the lecturer’s responses were 89.70% (very practical) and 81.63% (practical) student responses. In conclusion, the results of developing mobile AR applications that are declared valid and practical can provide a more interactive and exciting learning experience for students to increase their interest and understanding of learning. Therefore, mobile AR is an exciting option for further integrating engineering education into higher education . © 2024 by the authors.

This study investigates the perceived employability and academic performance of engineering students enrolled for placement services at higher education setting in India. The key question is how the students overcome the burden of placement activities along with the regular academics and how far the academic stress effects on their academic performance and particularly on their perception of being employable. This study is an empirical study which intends to test a model using PLS SEM approach (SmartPLS 3.0). Survey of engineering students in the northern India was done through multistage random sampling and data analysis is done to test the hypotheses. Result of PLS-SEM analysis proposes that engineering students particularly enrolled for placement services, can perform academically well and have high perception of being employable due to improved skills despite of having academic stress. Predictive relevance of the proposed model further extends the understanding of the role of placement services on perceived employability and academic performance among engineering students. The results of this study through testing thus exposes the channelisation of academic stress into productive factor perceived employability which is in benefit for mental well-being of students. This study provides opportunity to explore further the placement related activities. © © 2024 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

engineering education faces complex constraints, not only future challenges, such as pandemic situations have to be taken into account, but also the heterogeneous pre-knowledge of students. Thus, the learning objectives should not only focus on complex knowledge or technical respectively problem-solving skills development but also on integrating sustainable aspects and resource efficiency. In context of individual needs of learners, it is also evident to consider gender and diversity aspects. Flexible and hybrid learning paths with hands-on experiences on cyber-physical systems may be appropriate to enable individual competence development. Thus, in this contribution the technical architecture and functional features of cyber-physical systems are analyzed to develop learning scenarios that meet the different requirements. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

The authors carried out a review study on the pedagogy for teaching communication skills (CS) in engineering higher education institutions with a view to firstly present the trend on the instructional pedagogical approaches used in an engineering classroom and secondly, to show the impact of these approaches on learners' development of CS. In order to address the research questions, we adopted 'Systematic Literature Review' as a research methodology and reviewed empirical research studies published between the year 2001 and 2021 exploring electronic database. Having followed the review protocols, we finally selected 26 research articles for a detailed analysis and synthesis. In regard with number of publications, the trends placed the USA at the top position which was followed by India. Overall, we found a lack of experimental research, subsequently a lack of evidence-based teaching practice, in the domain of pedagogy for developing CS leading to the assumption of still prevalent conventional lecture method of teaching in the CS classroom which is further held responsible for poor CS among engineering graduates. The teaching trend indicates that engineering institutions across nations are increasingly becoming aware of evidenced-based teaching approaches and are adopting innovative, learner-centered methods blended with ICT tools to facilitate the process of developing CS, along with other generic skills which has positive impact on learners' development of skills and attributes. The findings have implications for both; research and classroom teaching. © 2024, Rajarambapu Institute Of Technology. All rights reserved.

The holistic integration of the human workforce in digital and sustainable manufacturing and logistics systems requires structured approaches for the systematic (re-)alignment of professional education initiatives. engineering education is seen as a critical investment for the further development of industry and society. However, future engineers will require more than just a strong technological background. Empirical-based success factors that contribute to the holistic reorientation of engineering education are typically researched in a fragmented manner and the focus on competence-orientation is frequently overlooked, especially in the Industrial engineering and Management (IEM) discipline. In this paper, the authors conduct a systematic literature review on engineering education with an emphasis on competence-based engineering education in the IEM discipline. Moreover, the authors provide fruitful implications for the competence-based realignment of engineering education , present an amalgamated overview of competences that are considered necessary for future engineering education , and provide a set of novel methods and tools. © 2024 The Author(s). The discrepancy between competence and real work in engineering graduates can be resolved with cooperation by the construction industry. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the appropriate and required architectural engineering competencies with the current demands and conditions of the construction industry. So, this study aims to analyze the determinants of competence and test the competency development model for architectural engineering graduates according to the needs of the construction industry. The research sample method is non-probability sampling using purposive sampling. The research sample consisted of 240 practitioners and trainers from 40 construction industry companies. The PLS-SEM technique was used to test the measurement and structural models (3 dimensions, 8 elements, 47 constructs/indicators, and 9 hypotheses). The competence of architecture graduates is determined by the dominant factor, namely Utilities and Building Construction (UBC1 & UBC2, X = 89.90%), and Building Estimation and Costing (BEC7, X = 73.30%) is the lowest factor. The ability of the structural model to explain architectural competency measurements is 36.20% in the moderate category. The predictive relevance value (Q2) explains 47.5% to 56.0% of the phenomena predicted in the field and explains the level of strength of the observed value in the structural model. Furthermore, 9 hypotheses from 8 dimensions have a positive and significant effect. The results of this study can be a recommendation for schools in the competency implementation model, and efforts to improve graduates’ abilities and skills so that they can be absorbed by the construction industry and reduce unemployment. © (2024), (OmniaScience).
