Water/wastewater technician training institute: The first year retrospective

The Center for Water Resource Studies and the Bowling Green Community College of Western Kentucky University formed a partnership to address an anticipated Water & Wastewater Operator/Technician shortage over the next five to seven years. The Water and Wastewater Technician Training Institute (WTTI, pronounced "witty"), is a joint initiative with the employment sector (a number of water & wastewater utilities/municipalities/districts), state primacy agencies and technical assistance/trade associations to refine an industry needs driven curriculum that utilizes on-line course delivery to provide options for both traditional & nontraditional students. This partnership was presented at the 2008 ASEE annual conference. This paper will review the accomplishments and the lessons learned by this program over the first year of operation. The partnership has revitalized an existing Associates Degree program entitled "Water Utilities Management". The program requires sixty-seven (67) credit hours, including twenty-five (25) hours of General education Requirements, twenty-one (21) hours of Business Technology Core courses, and (21) twenty-one hours of Operations Track courses. The Operations Track courses can be focused toward either Water or Wastewater Operations. The program is designed to be delivered entirely online, allowing students to pursue their degree with unparalleled flexibility. According to the U.S. Department of education, in 2006-07, there were approximately 11,200 college-level programs that were designed to be completed totally through distance education; 66 percent of these programs were reported as degree programs and the remaining 34 percent were reported as certificate programs. Asynchronous internet-based technologies were cited as the most widely used technology for the instructional delivery of distance education courses; they were used to a large extent in 75 percent and to a moderate extent in 17 percent of the institutions that offered college-level credit-granting distance education courses. The WTTI courses are delivered through an open-source Course Management System (CMS) known as MOODLE (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment). The first Operations Track class, entitled Water Supply & Wastewater Control was offered/developed during the Fall semester 2008. This first course, as well as a second course entitled Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Systems will be available during the Spring semester 2009. As courses are developed, approval is sought for Continuing education/Contact Hours from Operator Certification Boards in the individual states. Academic content is being provided by core university faculty with support from adjunct faculty eligible staff. All instructors (academic and practitioner) involved in the program are undergoing collaborative professional development to ensure that they are receptive to the unique structure of the program. As a demonstrably functional framework is being put in place, the program is being extrapolated to address other regional policy, academic discipline and industrial sector issues beyond the initial Kentucky and Tennessee target area. University-offered Water and Wastewater Operator Certificate Programs are being developed to fast-track students into the industry and allow current operators to reach advanced certification levels at an accelerated pace. Partnering utilities and municipalities are developing internship and cooperative educational opportunities to ensure work-based experiences for students. Trade associations have committed to developing scholarship programs to lessen the financial burden for potential students. In addition, some individual utilities are offering tuition reimbursement for current employees who are pursuing academic degrees or certificate programs. Finally, an educational outreach program that integrates into high school science curricula is being developed. Medical engineering at Cardiff University. Part 1: Undergraduate programmes of study

Cardiff University has offered a medical engineering undergraduate programme since 2001 and hence delivers one of the longest-running and most established medical engineering programmes within the UK. It currently offers BEng (Hons) and MEng (Hons) programmes that are both accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and include the option to undertake a year in industrial employment. The admissions policy ensures that the intake consists of a diverse range of students and is typically very successful in attracting female students. The programmes consist of six key academic threads which ensure that the content is both relevant and continuous, with all threads tailored to provide a patient-focused learning environment. Students initially learn core and fundamental principles in years 1 and 2, supported by a range of laboratories and practical experimentation. The latter years then encourage the students to corroborate and apply this knowledge, including involvement in a range of project-based learning exercises. The programme is delivered by a core of experienced academic medical engineers, with support from other engineering colleagues, as well as colleagues from the School of Biosciences, the School of Medicine, and the National Health Service. Thus, the programme delivers a wide range of modules which guarantee that graduating students have a thorough understanding of all possible career options. These two factors are significant in making it possible for students to follow their chosen career path upon graduation.

Discussing and researching on engineering courses teaching in the university

A majority of engineering courses in the university have these characteristics such as much period, extensive content, very strong practice etc. The paper takes auto detecting and maintenance specialty as an example to analyze problems of engineering courses in the university in the practice teaching, and put forward many methods, means and new teaching mode to resolve these problems to improve further classroom teaching effect. An experiment of computer curriculum reform based on CDIO in engineering education

CDIO is a new mode in modern engineering education distinguished from traditional modes, which is project-based. CDIO stands for conceiving, designing, implementing and operating. It has been proved effective in engineering education. After the steps of CDIO analyzed, an example using CDIO is presented to show how CDIO works, and how traditional courses are changed into CDIO courses as well. Promoting creativity through problem oriented project based learning in engineering education at Malaysian polytechnics: Issues and challenges

Self-directed learning and other life-long learning skills are among requirements of today workers. To sustain in competitive globalised world of work they need to be creative, innovative, critical and analytical in their approach. In order to achieve all those competences, learning institution can no longer teach their students using traditional teacher-centred approach only. More student-centred approach such as Problem Based Learning (PBL) and Problem Oriented Project Based Learning (POPBL) should be employed. It is believed that those two approaches are able to promote the competencies required for lifelong learners. In the present teaching scenario, polytechnics are still practicing the traditional approach in classroom such as pen-and-paper or exam-based learning. Students can no longer survive by memorizing textbooks, they now need to explore and experience genuine tasks that connects to the real-world; in which they can develop, master, and demonstrate authentic skills. engineering education needs to move from an instructive to constructivist approach.Problem based learning (PBL) is one of the constructivist approaches where cooperation among learners plays important role in the learning method. Project is one of the core subjects in the Polytechnics system which carries 2.5 credit hours. Students will be assessed based on their performance throughout the projects as well as the final outcome of the projects. However most of these final projects designed by students are lacking of creative and innovative dimensions.PBL differs in certain aspects from conventional learning. In normal conventional classes, students normally learned based on what the lecturers delivered in class. This paper discusses issues and challenges the lecturers faced in promoting students-centred approach such as POPBL. Several suggestions are proposed to assist the implementation of POPBL approach in the polytechnics setting in Malaysia.

Communication in oral presentation: A Malaysian experience

This on-going study analyses Malaysian engineering students' oral presentations in relation to communication competencies during their 20 to 25-week Industrial Training Program. Students from four engineering faculties of two universities in Malaysia participated in this study. They were located at various industries sites in four states. The study adopts a blended approach of engineering oral presentation genre and a competency model in analyzing the data. Six main components, three from each approach are dealt with, namely Introduction, Body, Conclusion and Knowledge, Skill and Motivation respectively. The videotaped presentations and recorded interviews were transcribed and used to depict the actual performance. Based on the competencies that arise from the analysis, this study unfolds students' difficulties in communication and presentation skills. This set of skills is critical in determining a graduate's success or failure. © 2008 IEEE.

An integrated systemic approach to developing a professional water and wastewater workforce: ETD IT/IET interest group

Society for engineering education, 2008 The Center for Water Resource Studies and the Bowling Green Community College of Western Kentucky University has formed a partnership to address a Water & Wastewater Operator/Technician shortage anticipated over the next few years as "Baby Boomers" retire. The Water and Wastewater Technician Training Institute (WTTI, pronounced "witty"), is a partnership with the employment sector (a growing number of water & wastewater utilities/municipalities/districts), state primacy agencies and technical assistance/trade associations to refine an industry needs driven curriculum that utilizes on-line course delivery to provide options for both traditional & non-traditional students. The partnership is revitalizing an existing Associates Degree program entitled "Water Utilities Management" and integrating 4year transitions through formal articulation agreements. WTTI takes a pedagogical approach to elevating and transforming the water and wastewater operator positions from trades of last resort, to professions of choice, and integrates practitioners into the recruitment, retention and educational process to achieve a coupled education, training and capacity development environment. A gradual and strategic elevation of the perception, both internal and external, of the trades, through a combination of increased capacity, mobility and accountability will attract high school students whose interests and scholarly record fall between the traditional trades/vocations and academically-based professions, and through inappropriate choices limit their career advancement potential, and elevate skill levels in the critical environmental and public health functions of the water and wastewater utility sector. In order to limit the hurdles associated with integrating regulatory, trade association and academic principles into a single, functional, coherent framework, WTTI is initially focused on Kentucky and Tennessee. However, as a demonstrably functional framework is put in place, extrapolating to address other regional policy, academic discipline and industrial sector issues becomes a logistical rather than conceptual challenge. Partnering utilities and municipalities are developing internship and cooperative educational opportunities to ensure work-based experiences for students in the program, while the trade associations have committed to developing scholarship programs to lessen the financial disincentive for potential students. Academic content is provided by core university faculty, while practitioner oriented content is provided by qualified trade association and utility/municipality staff eligible for adjunct faculty status. Committed to the precept of open-knowledge, WTTI is extending and coupling an open-source hybrid practitioner cybercollaboratory (based on Drupal) with an open-source course management system (Moodle) to integrate the learning environment with practitioners and enhance retention of both students and the retiring practitioner knowledge-base. All instructors (academic and practitioner) involved in the program will undergo collaborative professional development to ensure that they are receptive to the unique structure of the program. All aspects of the program will be available through this on-line environment, allowing current practitioners to participate both as mentors, and as students pursuing career advancement goals.
